Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc. Exemplifies Environmental Leadership by Achieving Climate Restistered™ Status

Reporting complete and accurate emissions to The Climate Registry supports emissions management and reduction opportunities.

LONGVIEW, Wash., March 3, 2010—Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc. (LFPPI) achieved the environmental leadership status of Climate Registered™ by successfully registering its comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory according to the rigorous standards of The Climate Registry. Participation in The Registry's voluntary program demonstrates Longview's pioneering role within the pulp and paper industry.

Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc. worked to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 60 percent since 2000 (as of year-end 2008). Of the more than 400 Registry members, Longview is the first company from our industry sector, and the first pulp and paper mill in North America, to have an inventory certified under The Climate Registry requirements.

Climate Registered is the critical first step in a successful emissions management and reduction strategy. By establishing a clear and consistent inventory of GHG emissions, Longview gains insight into its operations and processes. It also better prepares the organization for the potential impact of new regulations and risk management strategies.

"Protecting the environment is one of our key objectives," said Longview President Randy Nebel. "We are proud to have our emissions profile independently verified by The Climate Registry, showcasing our emissions reductions."

Longview's 2008 inventory includes the carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions of its integrated kraft pulp and paper mill at Longview, Wash., and its two Washington state container plants located in Seattle and Yakima, as well as its entire ground fleet vehicles located throughout Washington.

Becoming Climate Registered requires the annual calculation, verification and reporting of complete and accurate GHG emissions inventories in a transparent manner for all North American locations. This consistency streamlines reporting and allows for easy data comparison across time and between organizations. Now that 2009 has ended, Longview plans to compile last year's inventory records and report its emission profile to The Climate Registry. These reports take time and the anticipated verification of 2009 will take place within 2010.

"Organizations that are Climate Registered are the true environmental leaders setting examples for others within their industries and communities. They work ahead of the curve and have voluntarily taken responsibility for reporting their emissions according to the most rigorous standards available," said Diane Wittenberg, executive director of The Climate Registry. "Longview has now joined this powerful community of Climate Registered organizations and has substantive data guiding and supporting its sustainable activities."
