Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc.
Wins Industry Award for Safety

LONGVIEW, Wash., Nov. 16, 2010 - Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc. received a prestigious industry award recognizing the company's achievements in risk and safety. The "Managing Risk and Safety" Company of the Year' prize was presented today during a Pulp & Paper International (PPI) ceremony held in Brussels, Belgium. The PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognizing these achievements in the sector.

"We are delighted to earn this award," said President Randy Nebel. "Safety is a prerequisite for work at Longview. People across the company have demonstrated a commitment to safety - the improvements we've made are a reflection of their dedication."

In 2007, Longview was acquired by Brookfield Asset Management. A complete restructuring began by establishing a clear vision for safety. Longview has demonstrated a fundamental shift in safety culture since then, and achieved a reduction of greater than 70 percent in its OSHA incident rate during a period of rapid change.

Pat Ortiz, pulping production manager, accepted the award on Longview's behalf. "At our company, employee safety is becoming a foundational value," he said. "Leaders review every injury, focusing on communication and future prevention, while looking for opportunities to use that information to continuously improve."

PPI magazine editor Mark Rushton said, "This is the second year we have organized the PPI Awards and we're very pleased again with the quality and quantity of the entries." Rushton served as jury chairman for the PPI Awards 2010.

Industry renowned names such as Teresa Presas (CEPI), Duncan Pollard (WWF), Rod Young (RISI), Roger Warwick (Association of Print and Paper Technicians) and Jim Keller (ICCA) were involved in the judging, along with other international experts in different fields.

In late October, Longview also won two awards from the Portland chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Longview was selected for "Best of Show" for its True Craft™ brand launch campaign, and received a Spotlight Award for launching the brand with its employee audience.

Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc. produces light-weight, high-performance multiwall and complementary specialty kraft papers for an established domestic and global customer base. The company also produces containerboard and corrugated boxes. Longview operates a pulp and paper mill at Longview, Wash., and a network of seven converting plants in the western United States.
