Linerboard

Linerboard accounts for the second largest volume of paper made in the United States ranking just below printing and writing papers. Linerboard as manufactured by Longview Fibre is classified as Fourdrinier Kraft Linerboard because of the type of paper machine on which it is made. Longview Fibre has a basis weight capability range from 17 pounds to 69 pounds per one thousand square feet. Examples are natural linerboard and, corrugating medium.

The primary use of the linerboard grades produced at Longview Fibre is the manufacture of corrugated containers for packaging products. (A more complete description of this process is contained in another part of this web page.) Linerboard may contain almost 100% recycled fibrous material.

Other uses of linerboard type paper include converting it into laminated wrapper that is used in the paper industry to wrap and protect rolls of paper during shipping and saturation with asphalt or resin to produce diverse products such as vapor barriers for the construction industry. Because of the thickness and strength of linerboard, it is often used in applications where it provides a cushion or barrier to protect other products.

An important characteristic of the majority of linerboard products is its recycled content. Of the paper products it has one of the highest recycling rates. The material can be pulped again and reused in the production of new linerboard.
